We study the systems behind a turn.
Carve Lab is a small research and design practice. We measure what happens when a rider carves, describe it plainly, and build tools from what we learn.
Thesis
A carve looks like a single movement and is not one. It is the output of a system: snow surface and weather set the conditions, equipment translates them, the rider's movement loads and releases an edge, and forces resolve into a line. Change any input and the outcome changes, often in ways that are easy to feel and hard to describe.
Most riding knowledge is passed on as advice, which works until it meets a rider or a surface it was not built for. We are interested in the layer underneath: what is actually happening, what can be measured, and where the honest edge of our knowledge is. That means separating what we observed from what we measured, and both of those from what we modeled.
The work takes three forms. The Carving Codex is the structured account of how the turn works. Experiments are published observations from instrumented sessions, each stating its own confidence. And SnowPlanGo is where the same thinking becomes a tool a rider can use on a given morning.
Where this goes
Snowboard carving is where we started, not the boundary of the work. The method is general: take a movement skill that people learn by feel, instrument it, and find out which parts of the received wisdom hold up. Nothing in that approach is specific to a snowboard, and nothing in how we model conditions, technique, and outcome is either.
We expect the same tools to apply to adjacent board and gravity sports first, and to movement science more broadly after that. We are saying so here because it shapes what we build now, not because there is a roadmap to announce.
